My tattoo was done by David Hale in Athens, GA. I sent him a drawing by Paul Klee, a 19th century Swiss/German Expressionist/Surrealist artist entitled “The Twittering Machine.” Playing with themes of industry and nature, Klee created a haunting yet playful image of bird heads attached to a flimsy line being turned by a crank over a furnace. Because of how many various interpretations there are available for that drawing, this tattoo is filled with meaning. However, for me, as an Art Historian it represents the creative result of artistic inspiration and the role of the patron in that process.
